IPSWICH UNITED SERVICES BOWLS CLUB HISTORY
The birth of Ipswich United Services Bowls Club in April 1946 was the inspiration of Returned Servicemen from the Second World War.
Some of the most influential people in the Ipswich community at that time were among the original membership. The chairman was a local chemist, while the committee included the Mayor of Ipswich, solicitors, estate agents, council executive, mine proprietors and Prisoners of War.
The original minutes of the formation of the Club and subsequent annual reports from that time, tell a compelling story of vision, hardship, dedication, mateship, and success.
From that early beginning, when foundation members struggled through with the very basic essentials, Ipswich United Services Bowls Club has grown into a flourishing club, foremost promoting bowls, and serving the local community in the form of leisure and recreation.
The thread of pride and spirit of mateship, which existed in those early days, has flowed through the years, and are treasured qualities in our club today.
Ipswich United Services Bowls Club is known as the "Friendly Club". Efficient and the envy of our competitors, the Club is very conscious of its position in the local community and supports a number of local welfare organisations - Blue Nurses, St Vincent De Paul, Ipswich Hospice and other worthy causes.
Ipswich United Services Bowls Club has been fortunate in having a number of high quality presidents, encouraging members to be self-sufficient and strive on a personal basis to achieve.
There are many stories of success and achievement within this club. Recently we have formed school-based programs for both high schools and primary schools. Both programs work towards having schools ready to participate in the 'Inter-School Challenge'. The high schools have competed for the "Pisasale-Morrow Shield" for four years with a different winner coming forward each year. The primary schools now play for the "Bernie Ripoll Shield" with Ipswich Central School being the inaugural winners.
The Club conducts a number of important Bowls Events each year but none is more significant than the Malayan Cup. This event has been held annually since 1948 and is dedicated to Prisoners of War. It is a very fond part of our proud heritage.
Ipswich United Services now has the largest Bowls Club Membership in South East Queensland with almost 400 bowling members.
